About BYOTchat

The idea of #BYOTchat developed from my school district’s 1:1 iPad Committee.  We realized that although the iPad is a powerful educational tool, it was not within our school’s financial capabilities to outfit each student with iPads.  Our committee then shifted towards favoring BYOT as the our 1:1 mobile learning solution.

Then came the reality.  The reality that we didn’t know what to do next.  Even though our school’s campuses were already wifi, we knew we had to do more than just tell students to bring devices.

I turned to Twitter, searching through every possible hashtag I could think of.  On January 10, 2012, I posted a “Help Wanted” on my blog.  Now less than a month later, the idea of #BYOTchat has been tweeted and retweeted to over 125,000 followers on Twitter.

Educators and administrators are looking for advise on BYOT – what many feel is their only viable solution to 1:1 computing.  I’m happy to have played a small part in the development of #BYOTchat, but I’m even more thrilled about what I will learn from others at #BYOTchat.

Our inaugural chat on Thursday, Februrary 2, 2012, discussed ”First Steps to Take in Implementing BYOT” and it was a wild success.  Thank you to everyone who participated.

Join us every Thursday from 9:00-10:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #BYOTchat. All are welcome.

  1. Thanks for taking on this topic. It is important to keep working to refresh the profession and to help our students to remain engaged.

We also need to keep this in the forefront in light of the continued devolution of education budgets, pay-for-performance initiatives and the wonderfully overwhelming amount of new tech and great resources for teaching with tech.
