#BYOTchat for 03/29/2012

Chat reads from top to bottom

TimeToKnow Since Steve is running late, I’ll open :) – Welcome to #BYOTchat everyone! Today ‘BYOT in the Trenches’ http://t.co/XfI8kiuY
SteveHayes_RB60 Good Evening and welcome to #BYOTchat! Tonight’s topic “BYOT in the Trenches”  – Their use after the initial excitement. #byotchat
BYOTNetwork Welcome to #BYOTchat! After the students bring technology to school, what happens next?  What are you doing with #byot #byod?
neene Greetings to everyone on for #BYOTchat I always learn so much “listening” to everyone here.
SteveHayes_RB60 How are devices being used after the initial excitement of bringing devices to school has subsided? #byotchat
hugghinss @SteveHayes_RB60 Good evening Steve #BYOTchat
SrtaLisa @SteveHayes_RB60  After 3 years (of optional implementation), the students are keeping it alive, less enthusiasm from teachers #BYOTchat
SteveHayes_RB60 @neene Glad you made it! #byotchat
slackt Hi everyone! Hope everyone is having a great night. #byotchat
SteveHayes_RB60 @hugghinss Hi Shelly! Great to see! #byotchat
SteveHayes_RB60 @slackt Hi Tim – Great to have you back again! #byotchat
SrtaLisa @SteveHayes_RB60 Next year is non-optional buy-in from teachers, so it will be interesting again #BYOTchat
SteveHayes_RB60 @BYOTNetwork Since your school is already BYOT, how long did that initial excitement period last?  #byotchat
ghartman @BYOTNetwork My district just started BYOT this year and we are struggling to get teachers on board. Need to work on PD. #BYOTchat
TimeToKnow @lisaajk No problem – I’ll interject if I can.  Doing #BYOTchat tonight. Will there be an archive?
slackt @SteveHayes_RB60 Thanks Steve! Busy times, like everyone. #byotchat
SteveHayes_RB60 @ghartman Getting teachers to change old habits seems to be a common problem. #byotchat
hugghinss @SteveHayes_RB60 I can’t stay long. After the excitemt wore off in my class we began to think about productivity. #BYOTchat
TimeToKnow @srtalisa @SteveHayes_RB60 How do they manage to do that? If teachers don’t use devices, what are students doing? #BYOTchat
neene #byotchat It’s an interesting ques.  We aren’t going byot, yet.  But toying with idea of making personal devices more than toys.
SrtaLisa @TimeToKnow  The students request/suggest how to use devices – most teachers are willing as long as they don’t have to plan it #BYOTchat
squirrelfriend1 MT@BYOTNetwork My district started BYOT this year- we are struggling to get teachers on board. Need to work on PD. #BYOTchat I’m with you!
TimeToKnow @ghartman @BYOTNetwork Teachers run a pretty wide range of enthusiasm – some need to be pushed more than others. #BYOTchat
SteveHayes_RB60 Archives of #byotchat are posted on http://t.co/wDb50UYI #byotchat
neene @TimeToKnow great idea making byot student centered #byotchat
BYOTNetwork @SteveHayes_RB60 It didn’t last long. The teachers have to know what they want students to do with devices. #byotchat
hugghinss If the teacher is willing to listen & receive feedback from students, they will drive the usage #BYOTchat
ZinkEd_u @BYOTNetwork an then help teachers to keep the devices on. Often, teachers are “quitting” before full implementation. Spark dies.#BYOTChat
ghartman @SteveHayes_RB60 Working on summer PD ideas now and would like to get our students involved, so teachers hear from them. #byotchat #byotchat
slackt We are going to be looking at more PD for teachers and visiting classrooms using personal devices for ideas. #byotchat
squirrelfriend1 We are trialing this year, full out next year. We have used response sites, tried backchanneling and collaborative activities. #BYOTchat
SrtaLisa @slackt hate sound pessimistic, but training might be better with sts – a bottom up change. With tchers focus on changing mindset #BYOTchat
BYOTNetwork @ZinkEd_u Right – How do you keep the spark alive? Sustaining BYOT is essential. #BYOTchat
TimeToKnow @lisaajk I do the archive for #BYOTchat, so if you need help, let me know.  You can see our archive @ http://t.co/GgfqFoWo
slackt It is a culture shift and a new way of thinking. It will take a bit of time, but things will change in time. #byotchat
TimeToKnow @srtalisa Good to hear teachers are receptive to student input #BYOTchat
ZinkEd_u @SteveHayes_RB60 @ghartman getting students to see devices as learning and not just entertainment tools can be a bump too. #BYOTChat
slackt @ghartman I like that idea as well. Students know the technology more than we do most of the time!!! #byotchat
SteveHayes_RB60 Students need training on using tech to be productive.  I’ve tried to push evernote among my students but few are staying with it #byotchat
TimeToKnow We have a number of classrooms where the teacher has a student who assists with tech #BYOTchat Anyone do this in a more formal way?
squirrelfriend1 Most of our teachers are very leery if not downright negative at this point. #byotchat
SrtaLisa @TimeToKnow our school has a Tech Squad – sts are formally trained each fall – normally there is at least 1 per class #BYOTchat
BYOTNetwork We are providing more PD on project based learning.  The devices are the tools to get there. #BYOTchat
TimeToKnow @squirrelfriend1 What have you used for backchanneling? #BYOTchat
slackt @SrtaLisa A wise man once said, “From a spark comes a great fire.”‘ #byotchat
BYOTNetwork @ZinkEd_u Good point – and parents too, because they often buy devices to keep kids quiet in the backseat and restaurants! :-) #BYOTchat
neene @ghartman great point devices are just devices.  Teaching and learning is up to the students and teachers #byotchat
SteveHayes_RB60 We done some backchanneling at faculty meetings with TodaysMeet #byotchat
squirrelfriend1 We are starting a std digital club.  They will share ideas with each other and then go out to teach the teachers.  #byotchat
slackt Curious. How many of your schools are purchasing some of these devices for the students? #byotchat
ghartman @slackt I hope that hearing from students will make teachers more enthusiastic. #byotchat
squirrelfriend1 @TimeToKnow We have tried edmodo and titanpad.  Emodo was easier, but I would like to try titanpad again with more practice. #byotchat
ghartman @SrtaLisa @squirrelfriend1 Would love to hear how your student training works for your student tech squads.  #byotchat
newtechnetwork RT @BYOTNetwork: We are providing more PD on project based learning.  The devices are the tools to get there. #BYOTchat
SteveHayes_RB60 I like that idea – RT @BYOTNetwork We are providing more PD on project based learning. The devices are the tools to get there #byotchat
SrtaLisa @slackt The school library have some devices that can be checked out, but limited number #BYOTchat
slackt @ghartman I would hope so. They are the target audience. Nothing wrong with asking them how they want to learn. #byotchat
ZinkEd_u @hugghinss elem. student need knowledge on how devices can be used 4 learning. We assume that kids know a lot, but it’s a myth. #BYOTChat
ghartman @SteveHayes_RB60 That’s a great idea modeling things at faculty meetings.  #byotchat
SteveHayes_RB60 Those of you who are already doing BYOT – What were the most popular first steps?  Polling? Backchanneling? …? #byotchat
ZinkEd_u @BYOTNetwork I think continuous PD is a key. Must be consistent and transparent to all teachers AND parents. #BYOTChat
squirrelfriend1 @ghartman @srtalisa I’ll let you know next fall. We r still in planning stages. #BYOTchat
ghartman I agree! RT @ZinkEd_u: @BYOTNetwork I think continuous PD is a key.Must be consistent and transparent to all teachers AND parents. #BYOTChat
neene Piloting edmodo this year with a handful of teachers.  Tech novice loves it.  The tech savvy are busy. It’s an interesting combo. #byotchat
neene @slackt #byotchat as part of a grant we are beginning to provide some devices for students.  So far it is amazing.  But just starting out.
squirrelfriend1 I have mentioned backchanneling in staff PD sessions, not a lot of enthusiasm yet. #byotchat
TimeToKnow @squirrelfriend1 What did you like about titanpad?  Edmodo has been blowing up lately #BYOTchat
slackt We did some polling to find out what teachers wanted to have their technology PD focused on. #byotchat
BYOTNetwork @ZinkEd_u And constantly turning the screws with high expectations for #BYOT from school leaders and community. #BYOTchat
hugghinss @ZinkEd_u Absolutely true. I teach HS students & we had to spend time Working with devices for more than FB or texting #BYOTchat
SrtaLisa @SteveHayes_RB60 surprisingly from the sts, note taking was most popular. With GDocs, notes, or using digital camera to capture #BYOTchat
ZinkEd_u @slackt purchasing devises is kind of undermining the very point of BYOT -Bring Your Own Tech. Don’t you think?:) #BYOTChat
TimeToKnow @srtalisa That’s very cool – what’s the feedback been like from teachers? #BYOTchat
SrtaLisa @TimeToKnow As teachers we love it, yes I could fix the issues myself, but I don’t have to stop teaching to take care of it #BYOTchat
SteveHayes_RB60 @SrtaLisa That seems the case with us. #byotchat
hugghinss @SteveHayes_RB60 Polling and sharing as in contributing to class discussion via Twitter were first for us. #BYOTchat
slackt @neene #byotchat The devices are also accessible for the classrooms.
ZinkEd_u @SteveHayes_RB60 @BYOTNetwork Agree, but then you make them eat the whole elephant! Too scurry for some. #BYOTChat
SteveHayes_RB60 @hugghinss Do you have a separate class twitter account?    #byotchat
hugghinss @ZinkEd_u @slackt I would say having some devices available to support student w/o access is important #BYOTchat
slackt @neene #byotchat We are kind of going in he same direction. We are putting these devices into our libraries and changing how they are used.
TimeToKnow @stevehayes_rb60 @SrtaLisa Some of these features are so basic (notetaking/backchanneling) it makes sense to start with them #BYOTchat
slackt @ZinkEd_u Kind of. But if you have a population that cannot afford these devices….. #byotchat
ZinkEd_u @SteveHayes_RB60 storytelling and assessment tools were big hits in our elementary. #BYOTChat
SteveHayes_RB60 RT @hugghinss: @ZinkEd_u @slackt I would say having some devices available to support student w/o access is important #byotchat
squirrelfriend1 @TimeToKnow I liked titanpad cuzit seemed more linear. Kids didn’t like trying to figure out colors/names. #BYOTchat
SrtaLisa @TimeToKnow the key to success with Tech Squad = the sts love the title, embrace their skills, and volunteer before being asked  #BYOTchat
SrtaLisa RT @ZinkEd_u: @SteveHayes_RB60 storytelling were big hits in our elementary. #BYOTChat – storytelling popular in foreign language, all levels
neene @slackt cool it is expensive to bring in the tech.  That is the benefit of byot reduces cost 4 schools.  But also not universal #byotchat
nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 you have to have back up devices if some fail during class #byotchat
BYOTNetwork @hugghinss We are focusing on Levels of Use with @bernajeanporter Spectrum of Tech Uses http://t.co/jsaY2kr1 #BYOTchat
hugghinss @SteveHayes_RB60 Yes, I reserve the other account for my classes. #BYOTchat
slackt @hugghinss @zinked_u And in an elementary school the kids may not all have these types of devices. #byotchat
BYOTNetwork @slackt @zinked_u We do have school resources – desktops, laptops for stdnts without devices.  Some iPods & iPads too. #BYOTchat
squirrelfriend1 @SteveHayes_RB60 They are fired up about BYOT. I should wait until we are successful in our trial 1st before there’s a revolt. #byotchat
TimeToKnow @squirrelfriend1 Edmodo isn’t a linear conversation? I’m not familiar with how they work/look #BYOTchat
hugghinss @BYOTNetwork @bernajeanporter I like this. I am going to favorite it & look more closely later. Thanks for sharing #BYOTchat
neene @TimeToKnow it depends on the user.  Our first conversations were circular but later conversations were more linear.  #byotchat
hugghinss @slackt @zinked_u Exactly. I would think having devices on campus would even more in elementary. #BYOTchat
squirrelfriend1 Scanning and creating QR codes seems pretty basic for beginners. We now scan primary sources in HS history but QR codes anywhere. #byotchat
nathan_stevens @slackt in elementary school have like devices may be important for student having a feeling being equal. #byotchat
ZinkEd_u @hugghinss I don’t believe in purchasing class sets. We think to buy one of each kind as diversity of tools to use in the library #BYOTchat
slackt It come back to people to use them in the classrooms. #byotchat
TimeToKnow RT @SteveHayes_RB60: I like the student “Tech Squad” name #byotchat
hugghinss @ZinkEd_u I would agree class sets are cost prohibitive & doesn’t encourage byot. Device availability must be considered though #BYOTchat
SteveHayes_RB60 I like the student “Tech Squad” name #byotchat
nathan_stevens @squirrelfriend1 we use QR codes to help search genre book collections #byotchat
BYOTNetwork @nathan_stevens @slackt @ZinkEd_u Different devices forces more differentiation and collaboration – a silver lining of #byot #BYOTchat
nathan_stevens @hugghinss @zinked_u I look at my son’s sc,hook and there is not anyway the parents could afford any device #byotchat
TimeToKnow @byotnetwork @SrtaLisa @ZinkEd_u @SteveHayes_RB60 Makes the whole thing sound more official #BYOTchat
ZinkEd_u @slackt I came from Title I school, & I was surprised how many had them. We have 90 laptops & 4 desktops in classes 2 supplement. #BYOTchat
nathan_stevens @hugghinss @zinked_u Schoo darn auto correct #byotchat
AJBianco RT @cybraryman1: My QR Codes page: http://t.co/HS3mHExS  #BYOTchat
SteveHayes_RB60 What seems to be the device of choice among sts?  I know the tool must match the task, but sts may not have more than 1 tool #byotchat
cybraryman1 My QR Codes page: http://t.co/HS3mHExS  #BYOTchat
MyTakeOnIt I wanted to at least stop in to #byotchat tonight and say hi. Turns out it’s harder to sooth a baby a tweet than I thought it would be!
nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 I see more sudents with iPads than anything these days #byotchat
squirrelfriend1 We’ve just had discussions about class sets while writing a grant. Finally talked them into supplements to byot, not class set. #BYOTchat
ZinkEd_u @slackt they have them all after Christmas-after parents see effective use in a classroom. :) #BYOTchat
hugghinss @nathan_stevens @zinked_u That is a big issue within the byot debate. Students must have access first & foremost. #BYOTchat
BYOTNetwork Give the students the standard or topic & have them design the QR code activity or make the movie on a device. #BYOTchat
BYOTNetwork @nathan_stevens @stevehayes_rb60 I was surprised to see a kindergarten #byot class have 5 iPads brought in by stdnts. #BYOTchat
SteveHayes_RB60 @MyTakeOnIt Hi Jeremy – that’s one very cute kid you got!!! #byotchat
MyTakeOnIt @SteveHayes_RB60 Hi Steve. Thanks! I won’t deny it! #byotchat
squirrelfriend1 RT @BYOTNetwork : Give the students the standard or topic & have them design the QR code activity or make the movie on a device. #BYOTchat
hugghinss @SteveHayes_RB60 90% of my students choose smartphones #BYOTchat
TimeToKnow @nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 Have netbooks been getting more popular in class? #BYOTchat
neene Many no tech. But many do. Student said they needed 2call home they forgot lunch asked should they use their cell? in gr 4 lol #byotchat
SrtaLisa @hugghinss @SteveHayes_RB60 in middle school – split popularity between iPhones and iPod Touches #BYOTchat
slackt @ZinkEd_u I have a plan hatching for student led conferences in the fall right before XMAS…. #byot #byotchat
ghartman The same here. RT @hugghinss: @SteveHayes_RB60 90% of my students choose smartphones #BYOTchat
nathan_stevens @hugghinss @zinked_u the school is a very low income school, we have been looking at ways to share devices and use group collab. #byotchat
ZinkEd_u @nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 lot of iTouches in elementary. Then iPads. We have many DSI in 1st grade classrooms. #BYOTchat
nathan_stevens @TimeToKnow @stevehayes_rb60 we got a few chromebooks that we are going to check out to students to get their opinion #byotchat
TimeToKnow @nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 Really? What problems with netbooks are you having? #BYOTchat
squirrelfriend1 @ZinkEd_u my coworkers keep saying just wait until after Christmas. They will have them. #BYOTchat
nathan_stevens @TimeToKnow @stevehayes_rb60 netbooks are on the way out, they have too many restrictions. #byotchat
ghartman Have you seen students using DSi, 3DS, etc. in classrooms? #byotchat
neene #byotchat Don’t forget old tech.  I brought in my old cell. No plan.  But camera, notepad, compass, etc available to students 4 learning
ghartman @slackt This might be helpful for student led conferences to build eportfolios with mobile devices. http://t.co/cWJjV9FB  #byotchat
SteveHayes_RB60 When HS students opt to use smart phones over ipads or laptops, are they limiting their productivity? #byotchat
neene @nathan_stevens Does ur school use http://t.co/d1ILqlk6.  Love using them. Bring in free tech for recycling. #byotchat
MyTakeOnIt @ghartman @SteveHayes_RB60 Interestingly, while I’ve been on leave from work, I’ve been relying almost exclusively on my iPhone. #byotchat
slackt @BYOTNetwork @nathan_stevens @stevehayes_rb60 That well ….. Shocks me. #byotchat
BYOTNetwork @SrtaLisa Why do you think teacher enthusiasm is waning for #byot #byod #BYOTchat
squirrelfriend1 Lots of iPods and iPhones in 9th grade classes. We’ve polled std and 15% do not have device out of about 500. #BYOTchat
hugghinss @ghartman @SteveHayes_RB60 I am curious as to why your student choose their smatphones. Mine are more comfortable w/them. #BYOTchat
nathan_stevens @BYOTNetwork I am not a fan of fixed screen resolutions, several apps won’t run due to this #byotchat
slackt @SteveHayes_RB60 here we are looking at iPods and iPads mostly. #byotchat
ZinkEd_u @slackt now THAT’s a BYOT passion! LOL! #byotchat
TimeToKnow @nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 I’m really a fan of the idea of chromebook, but I’m not sure everything can be done in cloud yet #BYOTchat
slackt Have not heard of this yet. “@ghartman: Have you seen students using DSi, 3DS, etc. in classrooms? #byotchat”
MyTakeOnIt I always thought the iPhone would b my device of choice but now I’m putting my iPhone where my mouth is, so to speak #byotchat
hugghinss @SteveHayes_RB60 My students feel empowered by their phones. The comfort level & familiarity is high. #BYOTchat
neene #byotchat Live on my droid.  Why do we expect students 2separate from devices instead of use them to enhance learning in a blended model?
nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 with phones, web sites auto move to mobile version, have reduced access #byotchat
BYOTNetwork @hugghinss @stevehayes_rb60 Portability around a HS or MS campus is another plus for the smartphone. #BYOTchat
slackt @ghartman Thanks for the idea! I appreciate it. #byotchat
nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 I am at a university training future teachers, so my experience is a little different #byotchat
MyTakeOnIt @slackt I’ve heard of students using DSi, 3DS, etc… though haven’t seen it in any of my schools. #byotchat
neene @SrtaLisa great point. We need to adapt while adopting #byotchat
ZinkEd_u @ghartman a lot in primary grades. Here are some DSI lesson ideas and video of one of our teachers  http://t.co/jpDkNDXS #BYOTChat
SrtaLisa @SteveHayes_RB60 Sts not necsarily limiting productivity, but re-thinking the work. pre-writing in class, writing outside #BYOTchat
hugghinss @BYOTNetwork @stevehayes_rb60 Mobility is key. Using smartphones reinforces the idea that learning takes place anywhere. #BYOTchat
nathan_stevens @TimeToKnow @stevehayes_rb60 the nice part about a chromebook is that a student has a hard Ike saying I left my file on this comp #byotchat
ghartman @hugghinss The majority of them have those devices (phones), so it is more common. #BYOTchat
nathan_stevens @MyTakeOnIt @timetoknow @stevehayes_rb60 definitely looking at replacing PC laptops with more chromebooks #byotchat
ghartman @ZinkEd_u Thanks for the great resources. I have seen several videos from your district and my boss is in contact with your tech #BYOTChat
BYOTNetwork @SrtaLisa @stevehayes_rb60 This is a great topic! How to macro-size learning on a micro-sized screen! :-) #BYOTchat
neene #byotchat We r blessed w/ a community garden across street.  Mobile learning adds to the experience. BYOT would increase the availability
SteveHayes_RB60 RT @BYOTNetwork: @SrtaLisa @stevehayes_rb60 This is a great topic! How to macro-size learning on a micro-sized screen! :-) #byotchat
hugghinss @ghartman I have many who own laptops &/or iPads. They still choose phones. #BYOTchat
SteveHayes_RB60 Do students feel that laptops are just too bulky? #byotchat
neene #byotchat and as I said don’t forget the old tech.  Donations of “outdated” phones still r great for elementary school children.
squirrelfriend1 @neene very cool! Mobile learning in the park on a beautiful spring day! #BYOTchat
ghartman RT @neene: @SrtaLisa great point. We need to adapt while adopting #byotchat
neene #byotchat in these days of budget cuts too, byot helps us move forward faster. Supplement the havenots but bring in the haves.
nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 that is a yes. The standard spec laptop for us is rather heavy for students. #byotchat
MyTakeOnIt @nathan_stevens @timetoknow @stevehayes_rb60 Considering suggesting chomebooks to some schools but still find CBs so limiting #byotchat
neene @SteveHayes_RB60 #byotchat laptops fading. Mobile moving.
ZinkEd_u RT @ghartman: @neene Great point. I never thought about donations of outdated phones. #byotchat
TimeToKnow RT @neene: #byotchat We r blessed w/ a community garden across street.  Mobile learning adds to the experience. BYOT would increase the availability
MyTakeOnIt @nathan_stevens @timetoknow @stevehayes_rb60 I’m a big fan of google apps and cloud computing tho #byotchat
squirrelfriend1 If stds do bring laptops do they carry them in a bag? Our stds are not allowed to carry backpacks- not sure next year. #BYOTchat
neene @squirrelfriend1 We learn by doing. Let’s learn in the real world and document w/ mobile tech #byotchat
BYOTNetwork We see the most diversity of devices in elementary – then smartphones in secondary. #BYOTchat
ghartman @neene Great point. I never thought about donations of outdated phones. #byotchat
slackt @SteveHayes_RB60 And they take too long to boot up. They freeze at times, crash. Fewer probs on my iPhone and iPad. I can relate. #byotchat
TimeToKnow @mytakeonit @nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 Yeah – not everything can be done in a browser yet. #BYOTchat
SrtaLisa @squirrelfriend1 last week policy changed for netbook pilot, they can now carry backpacks. Hoping it reduces repair costs #BYOTchat
neene ty @ghartman it helps.  I tested last year bringing in my own old cell.  Did a whole mock geocaching activity? Compass still works #byotchat
BYOTNetwork @ghartman @neene We see many iPhones with cracked screens handed down to students to be used as iPod Touches. #BYOTchat
nathan_stevens @MyTakeOnIt @timetoknow @stevehayes_rb60 remember when recommending chromebooks, they do not work with IWBs #byotchat
MyTakeOnIt “@SteveHayes_RB60: Do students feel that laptops are just too bulky? #byotchat” I have a lot of stus who say that, yes
nathan_stevens @MyTakeOnIt @timetoknow @stevehayes_rb60 if your school is going google apps, the chromebooks forces you to really get into them #byotchat
SteveHayes_RB60 @MyTakeOnIt Students feel laptops are too bulky and “old school” – they much prefer phones or tablets #byotchat
neene @MyTakeOnIt Love the Google Cloud.  Spent last yr developing our Google Domain.  Students in the pilot group r loving it. #byotchat
TimeToKnow @nathan_stevens @MyTakeOnIt @SteveHayes_RB60 What are IWBs? #BYOTchat
slackt @MyTakeOnIt @nathan_stevens @timetoknow @stevehayes_rb60 What kids are doing with google docs is crazy. #byotchat
TimeToKnow @mytakeonit @nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 Me too – just switched over from FF to Chrome #BYOTchat use dropbox, evernote, and hootsuite
BYOTNetwork @slackt We are considering google mail.  How is your staff responding to the change? #BYOTchat
SrtaLisa @BYOTNetwork so with BYOT we are secretly forcing them to work smarter, but using more steps, to develop better products #BYOTchat
nathan_stevens @slackt @mytakeonit @timetoknow @stevehayes_rb60 we are waiting To have google+ added to our google accounts #byotchat
MyTakeOnIt @neene yeah, we’ve helped a lot of schools migrate o Google Apps and no one has ever regretted it #byotchat
neene Well all it’s been fun.  Need 2 prep for tomorrow. ty everyone #byotchat
nathan_stevens @TimeToKnow @mytakeonit @stevehayes_rb60 interactive whiteboards #byotchat
TimeToKnow @slackt @MyTakeOnIt @nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 Can GDocs replace Word completely? I haven’t used it much yet #BYOTchat
MyTakeOnIt @TimeToKnow @nathan_stevens @stevehayes_rb60 “switched” from FF to chrome—that’s funny! I use FF, Chrome & Safari together! #byotchat
ghartman Lots of Google talk. My district went the Microsoft route with Live@EDU and Skydrive. Anyone else? Wish we went the Google route. #byotchat
BYOTNetwork @SteveHayes_RB60 @mytakeonit Kids adapt more easily. If they can’t do something on their smartphone, they figure out another way. #BYOTchat
slackt @BYOTNetwork mixed response. They can use our old email sys until the end of the year.In Sept. no choice. So many positives though. #byotchat
nathan_stevens @MyTakeOnIt @timetoknow @stevehayes_rb60 I use everything but IE #byotchat
mcguirp @slackt Examples? #byotchat interested in knowing what kids are doing with google docs
SteveHayes_RB60 Our school went “google” two years ago – the staff likes it.  Google calendars are used a lot by the staff and posted online #byotchat
SrtaLisa Our district almost exclusively uses GDocs, except for research papers – spacing can be an issue, doesn’t print like it appears #BYOTchat
ghartman @mcguirp Here are some ideas: http://t.co/KCRWbeF6 #byotchat
TimeToKnow @mytakeonit @nathan_stevens @SteveHayes_RB60 Yeah – imported all my bookmarks, passwords, etc. – I really never liked Safari #BYOTchat
ghartman It’s been fun. Thanks for the great conversations in #byotchat Need to get my kiddos to bed.
MyTakeOnIt @neene nice chatting with you #byotchat
squirrelfriend1 Stds are Using google docs to find resources online to support debate topics within groups. #BYOTchat
SteveHayes_RB60 What you can’t do on Gdocs you can do in Open Office or Neo Office.  The cost of Office on every school computer is too much #byotchat
slackt @mcguirp They are collaborating. Sharing with me. The Forms. Presentations. U name it. #byotchat
MyTakeOnIt @TimeToKnow @slackt @nathan_stevens @stevehayes_rb60 Docs doesn’t replace Word 100% but word can do far more than most ppl need #byotchat
nathan_stevens @TimeToKnow if you are not formatting, than yes, if you need advanced features, than no #byotchat
TimeToKnow @nathan_stevens So it could work pretty well for homework, essays, etc. but nothing too extravagant #BYOTchat
MyTakeOnIt @mcguirp @slackt My favorite use for google docs is realtime collaboration #byotchat
slackt @mcguirp Have your kids started using it much yet? #byotchat
hugghinss I enjoyed the chat tonight. Thanks to everyone who shared. #BYOTchat
mcguirp @slackt #byotchat need to see more of this.  Our teachers bringing iPads into the class sharing 10 at a time
BYOTNetwork “@SrtaLisa: W BYOT we are secretly forcing them 2 work smarter & using more steps, 2 develop better products #BYOTchat” tchers & stdnts!
slackt @MyTakeOnIt @timetoknow @nathan_stevens @stevehayes_rb60 No but for what our kids need it for it works. No saving, USB sticks etc.#byotchat
nathan_stevens @TimeToKnow that sums it up #byotchat
SteveHayes_RB60 Agree RT @MyTakeOnIt: @mcguirp @slackt My favorite use for google docs is realtime collaboration #byotchat
SteveHayes_RB60 Our sts use google docs – they like not having a flash drive all the time #byotchat
SteveHayes_RB60 @MyTakeOnIt Good night to you & Oliver! #byotchat
SteveHayes_RB60 @hugghinss thanks Shelly #byotchat
ghartman @jgates513 Basically, our CIO likes to stick with Microsoft.  #byotchat

  1. There will be a period of seudtnts embracing The new freedom in ways that are not directl productive educationally – it’s to be expected. Maybe even embraced. Testing limits is what kids do. But, depending how the teacher acts/reacts, seudtnts can definitely come around. Example – the school in which I do most of my consulting is a typical inner city school. One of the English teachers went totally paperless this year, having a laptop cart totally at her disposal. She also freely allowed seudtnts to use their own devices. Result – yes, kids check Facebook etc, but they primarily stay on task. Why? I think first of all she is an interesting teacher; kids like her class. Secondly, she trusts them, has faith in them, treats them with respect. (actually, maybe my ‘secondly’ should be first)
